ICT with Udula Priyankara

Introduction

Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the few subjects offered to students across all A/L streams, whether you’re in Maths, Science, Technology, Commerce, or Arts. This alone shows how important ICT has become in today’s world. As we move deeper into the digital age, having a strong understanding of technology isn’t just useful; it’s essential. Studying ICT at A/L helps students build a solid foundation in areas such as computer systems, software development, networking, databases, cybersecurity, and digital communication. It opens doors to a wide range of university degree programs leading up to tech careers, locally and globally.

Subject Selection

  • Arts: Can be chosen as a major subject (Under the Social Sciences category)
  • Commerce: Accounting, Business Studies, Economics (ICT with 2 of these subjects)
  • Bio Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT (Here you can choose ICT instead of Physics)
  • Physical Science (Maths): Chemistry, Combined Maths, Higher Maths, Physics, ICT (Here you can choose ICT instead of Chemistry)
  • Technology: Science for Technology, Engineering Technology or Bio Systems, ICT (Here you can choose ICT as the third subject)

While ICT can be chosen across all streams, it tends to be more beneficial when selected within the Maths, Technology, Commerce, and Arts streams. For students in the Bio Science stream, however, choosing ICT is uncommon and generally unsuitable.

University Opportunities

Choosing ICT for your A/Ls is more than just selecting a subject. It’s a step toward a future filled with exciting and in-demand career paths. Whether you’re interested in building apps, analyzing data, protecting digital systems, or exploring the world of artificial intelligence, ICT provides the foundation you need.

After completing A/Ls with ICT, students have access to a wide variety of degree programs across Sri Lanka. Government universities like MoratuwaPeradeniyaColombo, and Sri Jayewardenepura offer competitive courses in fields such as

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Networking
  • Machine Learning

Private institutions such as SLIITIITESOFT, and NSBM also offer recognized programs that align with current industry needs and global tech trends.
